Scooter/Soul Charity Night
The Scooter / Soul Charity Night In Aid of Honey Rose Foundation
Well what can I say; about the first scooter night held at Soul at Joe’s it was electric! What an atmosphere, just a fantastic night had by all. The scooter people sure know how to party, there was no stopping them right from the start In fact, I got a phone call about 7: 15, by Tully saying where are you, I'm in the shower why what’s up! you'd better hurry up and get a move on, the clubs half full now, it was down to start at 8 ‘o clock by 8 it was full, all the tickets had been sold over the last few weeks, we'd only sold a few at Joes and the local soul clubs 50 in total so the soulies were out numbered, I hope they (the soulies ) enjoyed it as much as I did, the music was played by three local DJs and myself who are from the scooter scene and with me also providing the p a system.
Freddie Turner Who’s one of the DJs at Soul at Joe’s and a member of the Ace of Spades Scooter Club started the night off playing early 60 mod sounds by the Small Faces, the Spencer Davis Group, the Who ect. he played some class Blue Beat and Ska, Raphael Alphonso..Phoenix City, Skatalites..Guns of Navarro, Prince Buster.. Al Capone
Just to get the place warmed up and in the right mood this got the scooter boys up on the dance floor from the outset and he finished his spot playing some commercial
Northern Soul.& Motown for the girls
Col Walker up next Col is also a member of the Ace of Spades Scooter Club and was in a buoyant mood and like most people was up for a great night Col kick off by playing some commercial Motown and got the dance floor full with the scooter girls Col also played a few reggae tunes Young Gifted & Black, and Blackfield in motion, he then played some Two Tone and Jam
Just before the band were due on at 10 o’ clock they had an auction for a holiday break in a 8 berth caravan in North Wales, which was donated by one of the Ace of Spades Scooter Club member who's called Woody from Thatto Heath, very generous indeed I thought, and Col did a great job in getting the bids going, starting at a fiver and going up in increments of £5.00 pounds (I felt sorry for Rob Ross who was in the bidding right from the start and just lost out right at the end,) and it finely went for £90.00 pounds
The tombola also sold most things and a grand total of £640 pounds was raised by the club.
The presentation of the money was done on the stage by the Chairman of the Ace of Spades Scooter Club and organiser of the event Mr. Keith Davis to a Mrs Duffy from The Honey Rose Charity Foundation, she was thrilled and gave a small speech about the Charity Organisation and what they try to do for the people effected by the illness and stated, that they needed about £500 to take someone on their special day, she thanked every one for their kind gift. She also said she was having a great night listening to all the music and just watching everybody having such a good time dancing She left the stage to a great round of applause.
The lights went down and Col Walker introduced the act Mad Hat Ska. what a session Brill from their opening number to the encore these guys Matty & Ian were spot on and had the audience in the palm of their hand, even people who just bought tickets to support the charity, were stund by the energy of these guys on stage only a two piece outfit now, yet what a full solid sound, they were just brill and if you were a scooterist it must have been heaven sent. You got them all Madness the Specials, Rico, Bad Manners, the Beat, the Selector, lots of Two Tone and they never stopped for 1hour 15mins they brought the house down and they did two encores, just fantastic. We must do this again.
Then the room settled down, Jimmy Pilkington from Prescott’s A57 scooter club was on next and opened his spot With Duffy ‘s Mercy Which goes down well with the girls Jimmy’s spot was curtailed by the group doing two encores’ so he only played 45 mins of Northern Soul.
Last spot was myself and Tully we kicked of with some commercial punk which are big favourites on the scooter scene When the Kids Are United, Sham 69…Hurry up Harry, Skids…Into The Valley, Ruts...Babylon Burning, Tenpole Tudor…Swords of a Thousand Men, and Bow Wow Wow …I Go Wild In The Country we also played some Northern Soul, The Snake, Out On The Floor, Here I Go Again, 7 Days Too Long, Move on Up also played some Reggae, Shaving Cream, Reggae In your Jeggae and Ska Prince Buster’s Jet 707, Toots & Maytals….54/46 that’s my Number and Don Drummon …Last Call and we Finished off with a few English Tunes from the scooter scene Cock Sparrer… England Belongs To Me, Angelic Upstarts….
